Title | Riverside Woodland from Jackdaw Crag to Holgate |
Description | Riverside woodland from Jackdaw Crag to Holgate (PRN 12749). The woodland is described by the BSAHG (2013) as being originally a medieval managed plantation which received some coppicing in the post medieval period. BSAHG also suggest that trees in the woodland were harvested until recent times when woodland management lapsed. The current stock of trees are described as being less than 150 years old. Ancient woodland indicator species are present within the woodland, which is suggestive that the woodland maintains the necessary level of shading for shade tolerant species to continue to grow. Rare species include Fingered Sledge Carex digitata, Lily of the valley Convallaria majalis, Birds nest orchid Neottia nidus and Sanicle Sanicula europaea. These are also characteristic species known in Magenesian Limestone locations (BSAHG 2013) |
