TitleAsh Villa Outbuildings, Upperthong
DescriptionAsh Villa outbuildings, Upperthong. Barn containing possible 17th or 18th century building fabric.

WYAAS archives hold photographic prints of outbuildings at Ash Villa, Upperthong taken during renovation or demolition work (Lilley, K. 2002).
The images depict a rubble built barn with single storey outshut reduced in height to the lower span of the cart entry. The openings where visible have stone sills and lintels. The visible angle has quoins in the upper portion.
An interior shot depicts a wide opening supported by a wooden lintel which was possibly reused from an earlier building. The excavation of rubble in the interior revealed a recessed three light hollow chamfered mullion window set within well coursed stone work with a heavy bevelled stone course above. This appears to form the foundation of the barn walls above. In the return wall adjacent to the window was revealed a pedestrian entrance with square stone lintel and tie stone jambs. The revealed masonry appears to be in situ and of superior quality to the walls of the subsequent building.
The adjacent Ash Villa contains a reset date stone of 1755 and a second datestone which reads 'Rebuilt by J.H and L.H. A.D. 1866' [see PRN 12828]. These two date stones could date the building situated below the barn and the date of the barn itself. The revealed window and wall appears substantially earlier than the barn.
