Description | 481 491, Tong Street, Tong. Row of early 19th century stone cottages. 481 491, Tong Street were the subject of an archaeological assessment by Lucy Caffyn in 1982 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Workers' Housing Survey. The photographic images produced by the assessment are held by WYAAS (Caffyn. L. (WYAS/RCHME). 1982). The fieldwork report is transcribed below: 'These six cottages are of stone, and face south out to the main road. It seems they originally backed onto the ground behind, but this has been cleared away, and narrow back doors added to make them 'through cottages'. This is fairly old (the back doors have fairly thick lintels) perhaps c.1860? Originally there was a warehouse here; turned into these cottages. The stone is of millstone grit (?); the roofs are of stone; the doors and windows have stone surrounds, those to the rear being narrow stones. Each house has a living room downstairs and bedroom above. Both are heated and the stairs run along the back wall. The front door opens straights into the living. Two joists run on either side of the living room chimney breast (as at 37 Hind Road, Low Moor). There is a cellar, with coal hole, the grate being inscribed 'Taylor and Pearson, Bradford'. The houses are c.5m wide. These cottages have a long front garden (c.15m) with WC; with a stone front wall and gate posts; the wall is topped with flat stones. Next to, and attached to these, 493 and 495 are of a later build, of c.1840, and are slightly taller. 479, adjoining 495, is later still'. (Caffyn, L. (WYAS/RCHME). 1982.
