Description | 12, Tong Lane, Tong. Mid to late 19th century estate worker's cottage. Nos. 9 and 12 Tong Lane were the subject of an archaeological assessment by Lucy Caffyn in 1982 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Worker's Housing Survey. No.9 is treated as a separate record (see PRN 12819). The part of the resulting fieldwork report describing no.12 is transcribed below: 'No.12 Stone, much restored looks original in one gable, with large quoins. Faces north. Stone roof. There are three rooms, two bedrooms, both heated.... The windows have stone surrounds and fixed panes. It belonged to the hall (just up the road), and would have housed an estate worker'. (Caffyn, L. (WYAS/RCHME). 1982. '9 + 12. Tong Lane, Tong'). Current mapping depicts a 12a and a 12b Tong Lane. 12a did not appear on mapping until c.1894 (OS 6” 1st edition 1847. Sheet 217: OS 25” first edition c.1894). 12b is modern. 12a, a stone built cottage with two chimney stacks, may now be converted to garages forming part of a large modern dwelling (https://maps.google.com/.
