TitleTrackway to Gunter Wood, Boston Spa
DescriptionCropmarks visible on aerial photographs and from the ground according to BSHAG of a double ditched trackway of Romano British date in the Upper Deep Dale Valley, Boston Spa. This section crosses the arable field between High Street, Moor End Farm and Gunter Wood and runs in a south east to north west direction. the trackway continues into the next parish on a north west orientation and runs through Gunter wood where it exists as a holloway, the continues north as a raised double earthwork track (BSHAG 2013).
The trackway was recorded by the Lower Wharfedale NMP in 2004 where it was recorded as 'either double ditched or visible as a single,
wide hollow. Several fragmentary field boundaries abut the trackway' confirming the findings of the BSHAG.
Along the slightly raised track are significant quantities of Early Purple Orchid (Orchis Mascula). This species was only found with the woodland earthwork trackway and confirms that it represents a fragment of ancient shaded habitat (BSHAG 2013).
The trackway is included on the Boston Spa Archaeology and Heritage Group's Heritage List which will be incorporated into the Boston Spa Parish Council's Neighbourhood Plan and identified for preservation.
