Description | 107 115, Crystal Terrace, Clayton Heights, Tong. Late 18th to early 19th century terraced row. 107 115, Crystal Terrace was the subject of an archaeological assessment by Lucy Caffyn in 1982 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Workers' Housing Survey. The photographic image produced by the assessment is held by WYAAS (Caffyn, L (WYAS/RCHME). 1982). The fieldwork report is transcribed below: 'Terraced, 107, 109, 111, 113, 115, Crystal Terrace. Clayton Heights, Bowling, Tong. 113 and 115 share a chimney stack, and appear to be slightly earlier than 111, which adjoin them (there is a straight joint between 111 and 113). The two former may be of c.1790, the later 1820. Nos. 107 and 109 which adjoin 111 seem to be later still, with a higher roof, and behind 111 and 113 two cottages which back onto these seem to be later yet of c.1880. Low Moor has a coal pit Hornes Pit, at Stickler Lane. They are all of stone, with stone roofs. 111 115 are all c.7m deep by 7m wide, with two rooms only (one up one down), both heated. The doors and windows have stone surrounds; they have cellars with a coal hole (and a stone walled front garden). The rear walling of 115 is of thin pieces, laid randomly. The upper window at the front of 115 has a thick surround and a mullion dividing it into two lights, which differ from the upper windows of 111 and 113, which are single lights, with thin surrounds. 107 and 109 are similar, but have roofs c.18' taller, a gutter supported on projecting stones held by string course, and the windows don't have stone jambs. The rear walling of 107 is of thin blocks, ranging in width, with very thin, randomly laid pieces in the middle, and larger blocks at the top. The two cottages behind have sash windows, with stone sills and lintels, and a ground floor lean to at each side'. (Caffyn, L (WYAS/RCHME). 1982. '107, 109, 111, 113, 115, Crystal Terrace.
