Title | Leys Lane Old Hedged Stock Enclosure |
Description | Ancient hedgerows surrounding a small enclosure that according to BSHAG (2013) may have been a stock control feature, possibly associated with a sheep rearing industry centred at Clifford. according to BSAHG the enclosure is shown on aerial photographs as being associated with a track running north westwards towards a spring. The enclosure was found to have significant shrub flora that included Damson (Prunus insititia) suggesting that a possible dwelling existed nearby with chance seeding from Damson brought to the enclosure by humans. There was also an unusually high proportion of Hazel (Coryllus avellana). The enclosure is described by BSAHG as 'an important an irreplaceable ecological heritage asset and a rare and unusual historical feature'. The enclosure is included on the Boston Spa Archaeology and Heritage Group's Heritage List which will be incorporated into the Boston Spa Parish Council's Neighbourhood Plan and identified for preservation. |
