Nos. 8 and 10 Margaret Street were the subject of an archaeological assessment by Peter Thornborrow (WYAS) in 1994. WYAAS archives holds photographic slide taken in September 1992 which may relate to this event (WYAS. 1993). The fieldwork report is transcribed below:
'Description: Pair of semi detached Italianate villas, c.1865, two and a half storeys. Orange pink brick banded with cream brick, ashlar dressings and blue slate roof.
South easy front: Four bay symmetrical facade: handed pair of arched doorways with recessed inner arch, rusticated keystone and hood mould. Retains original six panelled doors with moulded surrounds and recessed panels flanked by central bay windows, in ashlar, with recessed panels under and cornice. 1st floor windows with raised and chamfered surrounds on brackets with above small windows under eaves, all have two paned sashes. Cream brick bands to sill/impost/mid band. Shaped gutter brackets to over sailing eaves to hipped roof. Bands continue around building. Return walls have slightly projecting lateral stack and arched stair window at mezzanine level retaining coloured margin lights. Lower rear ranges under two span hipped roofs at right angles to front range have ashlar bay windows with two light window above. Lateral stacks and four bays of windows to north west rear elevation: segmental arch in cream brick with wider six paned sashes to outer bays flanking smaller four paned sashes.
Set within tall walled garden with ramped ashlar coping, curved corner at junction of Margaret Street and St. John's Square.
Interior: No.10 (visible through windows) has contemporary deep moulded skirtings, architraves and panelled doors, deep moulded ceiling cornice and decorated central ceiling rose. Tiled stair hall with enclosed panelled stair with door under (to cellar)'.
