TitleMilepost Opposite St. Mary's Street, Boston Spa
DescriptionCast iron milestone fixed on a gritstone pillar. The milestone has angled sides and soping top plate beneath a round headed panel with raised lettering which states on the upper 'Tadcaster and Otley Road, Clifford cum Boston' and on the left 'Tadcaster 4 Miles', on the right side the stone gives mileages to Wetherby, Harewood and Otley (BSHAG 2013).
The English Heritage listing building description for the milestone (LBS No. 341989 ; UDA No. 1135051) is as follows:
Milepost. Late C19. Maker: Brayshaw and Booth, Liversedge. Cast iron, fixed on gritstone pillar. Angled sides and sloping top plate beneath round headed panel. Raised lettering reads:
On upper panel : TADCASTER and OTLEY/ROAD/CLIFFORD/CUM/BOSTON
On left side : TADCASTER/4 MILES
On right side : WETHERBY/3¼ MILES/HAREWOOD/7 MILES/OTLEY/15¼ MILES
The milestone is included on the Boston Spa Archaeology and Heritage Group's Heritage List which will be incorporated into the Boston Spa Parish Council's Neighbourhood Plan and identified for preservation.
