DescriptionFormer Methodist Chapel, Grove Road, Wakefield. Early to mid 19th century.

Early to mid 19th century Methodist chapel built in a Venetian Romanesque style of red brick with ashlar trim. The southern gable wall forms the principal elevation. The central formal entrance is accessed up a short flight of stairs. The door surround has projecting brick piers with moulded stone imposts. The entrance has round arched fan light window formed by brick voussoirs with an outer stone string dressing. The door is flanked on either side by a single–light window with plain brick arch (now blocked). There is a stone plinth course above basement level. A two light decorated Venetian arched window is centrally placed at first floor level and is flanked either side by a single light arched window. The window surrounds are in the same style as entrance. There is a moulded string course at sill and impost levels. A round window is present in the apex of the gable. The gable wall has stone copings, shaped kneelers and a ball capital. The left hand side of the building consists of an aisled bay; a square tower is positioned at the front right corner. The tower has a hipped roof with lantern and a two light Venetian arched window to the front and right hand side in top stage. The decoration of the front elevation is carried onto the tower
Side elevations are six bays long. There are plain brick arched windows to ground and first floor. Bays separated by brick pilasters.
A two storey brick annex is attached to the rear northern gable.
The chapel is present on the OS 6' 2nd edition map of 1894 (sheet 248).

The Grove Road Methodist chapel was the subject of a planning application in 2000 for 'Conversion of Methodist Chapel to 12 No. apartments' (Wakefield Council planning reference number 99/99/02239/E).
