Description | In August 2011 Ed Dennison Archaeological Services Ltd (EDAS) undertook a programme of gravestone recording at St Paul’s Church, also known as Horbury Methodist Church (PRN 10624). The work involved a photographic and descriptive survey of the gravestone, as well as a transcription of their inscriptions, and was required in advance of groundworks associated with the demolition of the church. A total of 35 gravestones were recorded, and the work was greatly enhanced by an earlier survey undertaken by the church in 1959 and the survival of a pre 1883 churchyard plan. The dates of death ranged from between 1837 to the very early 20th century, although the majority fell between c.1850 to 1880. Most of the gravestones were erected when the first chapel (opened in 1846 and demolished in c.1883) on the site was still standing, with a lesser number dating to after the second chapel in 1883 1884. For further details, including the location of the recorded gravestones, please see the final report (EDAS, 2013), a copy of which is on file in the HER. |
