TitleDesk-Based Assessment, Pontefract General Infirmary
DescriptionIn 2011 Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) undertook a desk based assessment for a 250m radius of Pontefract General Infirmary in advance of proposed demolition and development of the hospital site. The assessment was required to consider the impact such work might have on the remains of the medieval Dominican friary (PRNs 3403 and 7745), which is known to occupy part of the site, and was partly excavated during 1963 and 1989.
A total of 78 archaeological features and historic buildings were recorded within a 250m radius of SE 4569 2169 (centred on Pontefract General Infirmary). On the available evidence, it was concluded that more than half of the medieval friary has been built upon by the gradual expansion of the old Pontefract General Infirmary to the north of Friarwood Lane. The remainder of the friary site is believed to have lain within the eastern margins of the Valley Gardens (PRN 7745) to the west of the Friarwood Steps. Therefore, the area of highest archaeological potential is considered to be a rectangular area occupying the north eastern part of the site which is known to have covered part of the friary building complex and the cemetery to the north. The triangular southern part of the site is believed to have low archaeological potential. The remaining eastern part of the site is of uncertain potential, possible containing an eastward extension of the friary and covering the area of the tenements and gardens that extended southwards from the Hermitage (PRN 2737).
