Title | West Riding Printworks (County Stores)(demolished), Wakefield |
Description | West Riding printworks and County Stores, Wakefield. 1930s concrete municipal building demolished after 2007. The former printworks/County Stores were the subject of an archaeological photographic building recording in September 2007 by Archaeological Services WYAS. This survey was under taken in accordance with a specification set by WYAAS in advance of demolition (Wakefield Council planning reference number 05/99/68843. 'Demolition of 15 21 Burton Street demolition of County Hall extension and boiler house sealing up existing internal corridors on ground and first floor'). Although the survey and resulting report was primarily concerned with Nos. 15 to 21 Burton Street (see PRN 12957), the photographic images produced by the survey do include pictures of the former council depot taken during demolition (Archaeological Services WYAS. 2007). The images depict a two storey concrete building with cast concrete floors and columns and a steel framed saw tooth roof with northern light windows. The trusses formed three bays along the long axis of the building supported on internal walls or columns. The building had a roughly triangular plan with a long frontage to the south west which followed the curve of the former route of Cliff Lane. The two loading doors were situated at the southern end of this elevation. The building had a Classical influenced Art deco design with plain plinth, cornice and pseudo pilasters forming regularly spaced shallow recessed wall areas which contained paired windows to each floor. This was surmounted by a plain parapet wall. The building had a clean, undecorated finish with sharp lines. The building first appears around 1933 (OS later edition 25' map. Sheet 248.3). It was described as the ‘West Riding County Store’ at this time. The building replaced a mid to late 19th century Constabulary depot which shared the same plot (OS 25' 1st edition. 1893. Sheet 248.3). To accesses the images of the former County Stores please see the WYAAS files relating to Wakefield: Nos. 15 to 21 Burton Street (PRN 12957). (Lunn, K.R. (WYAAS). 2013. Description of the West Riding County Stores based on survey photographs and historic mapping. Description found in digital record only and not on file at WYAAS). The site is currently situated below the new Wakefield Council Wakefield One development. |
