| Description | Early to Mid 18th century dovecote originally for Littlecroft House. The dovecote retains internal features including nesting recesses and platforms inside. The BSAHG 2013) also state that an interesting but unconfirmed suggestion is that the dovecote was used in the 19th century as a Parish lock up. It is also suggested that the current owner fitted a door grill recently (i.e. c.21st Centuy). The BSAHG (2013) also suggest that the dovecoye may be part of a proposed development.
The English Heritage listed building record for LBS No. 341954; Liste Entry No. 1183513 is as follows:
Dovecote. Early mid C18, restored C20. Coursed, squared magnesian
limestone, stone slate roof. 1 storey with half basement, square single
cell. Doorway in south west side has renewed door beneath plain lintel;
continuous stone ledge over door with small louvred opening above. Eaves
band to hipped roof with ball finial. Rear: battered basement storey with
recessed, square headed doorway beneath deep band and shallower plinth band;
blind opening above perching ledge. Right return: stone ledge returned from
front with similar louvred opening above.
Interior: upper floor lined with nesting holes divided by stone blocks and
with stone ledges; C20 roof structure. Situated in corner of Rudgates
Builders' yard.
The dovecote is on the Boston Spa Archaeology and Heritage Group's Heritage List which will be incorporated into the Boston Spa Parish Council's Neighbourhood Plan and identified for preservation |
