TitleWatching Brief, 27 Market Street, Pontefract
DescriptionDuring November 2012 Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) were commissioned by Ed Dennison Archaeological Services (EDAS) to conduct an archaeological watching brief at the rear of 27 Market Street Pontefract. This was required to fulfil part of a planning condition connected with the demolition of outbuildings and the creation of a car park (see also PRN 10148). The development site is located with the historic medieval core of Pontefract.
No archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the watching brief. Instead the site revealed an extensive deposit of crushed red brick and other building material mixed with hardcore deposits, which was thought to come from the earlier demolition of former post medieval buildings on site. Although nothing archaeological was exposed, the groundworks undertaken in this instance were shallow. Therefore, it can not be discounted that early archaeological features do not exist below this level.
For further details please see the final report (ASWYAS, 2013), a copy of which is on file at West Yorkshire HER.
