Description | Wadsworth Royd Farmhouse, Wadsworth. Late 16th century house with 19th century alterations. 'Wadsworth Royd Farmhouse (formerly listed as Nos 2 and 4 Wadsworth Royd Farmhouse) House, late C16 with some C19 alterations. Large dressed stone, stone slate roof. Hall and cross wing plan. 3 room front. 2 chamfered mullioned windows of 2 lights (lacking mullions) to service end. Doorway in through passage position opposite similar to rear but lacks internal passage and opens into the service room. Heavy monolithic lintel, composite jambs with deeply chamfered surround. Housebody has double chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmould over with straight returns; 4 light fire window next to 7 light hall window which partly lacks mullions, (opened to form a doorway). 1st floor has flat faced mullioned windows of 5, 2 and 10 lights. Coped gable with kneelers and base for finial to apex stone. Single stack to ridge at division of the 2 rooms. Cross wing breaks forward, has altered 2 light sash windows in gable which is coped with kneelers, other mullioned windows preserved in return walls and to rear. Interior: Bressumer beam preserved as is fire screen with moulded muntins to which is affixed an original hanging cupboard inscribed 'IM 1632 SM', corbelled fireplace. (Stell, C.F. 1960. The photographic image produced by the assessment is held in the HER (Thornborrow, P.H. c.1990). The Wadsworth Royd farm complex was also visited by Peter Thornborrow (WYAS) in 1997. The photographic images produced by the assessment which contain images of the farmhouse, associated cottages and barn are held in the HER (Thornborrow, P.H. (WYAS). 1997) (also see PRN 12925 and PRN 12926). This was probably in connection with the proposed application 'MAFF Country Stewardship Scheme Grant for the restoration of traditional farm buildings ref. 49/355/44’. Thornborrow (Historic Buildings Officer. WYAS) was supportive of this application, producing a combined report which described the Wadsworth Royd complex and Birchen Lee Carr farm (PRN 12923)(Thornborrow, P.H. (WYAS). 1997). A copy of the report together with Thornborrow’s research archive and correspondence associated with the grant application are held in the HER.
