Title | Gothic Lodge, Hardcastle Crags, Wadsworth |
Description | Gothic Lodge, Hardcastle Crags, Wadsworth. Late 19th century neo gothic gate lodge. Gothic Lodge at Hardcastle Crags was the subject of a National Trust Vernacular Buildings Survey in 1992. The report describes the lodge as situated at the entrance to Hardcastle Crags on Midgehole Lane. This is a single storey building constructed of quarry dressed gritstone with sandstone ashlar quoins and chamfered surrounds to the windows. Ornate moulding to main door, wooden porch with bargeboard and oak door with 'medieval' designed strap hinges. Main window in east gable has a four light transomed window with a sandstone drip mould. Cruciform plan with sandstone chimney on each wing. The tile roof has been replaced in local flagstone. This is an interesting Gothic style lodge in an important location at the junction of the Hardcastle Crags estate. Late 19th century. The survey report provides a more detailed architectural description and a set of photocopies of photographic prints of the building. (National Trust. 1992.
