Title | Gibson's Bridge, Wadsworth/Heptonstall |
Description | Gibson's Bridge, Wadsworth/Heptonstall. Early 19th century bridge. 'Former Toll bridge over the Hebden Water. Early C19. Roughly dressed voussoirs and intrados to single segmental arch. Roughly dressed well coursed stone parapet with large stone copings. The north east end of the bridge is attached to No. 6 Gibson's Mill Cottages (q.v.) which carries the board recording the toll charges'. (English Heritage listed building description. Date listed 12/12/1984. http://list.english heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1226168. Web site accessed 18/10/2013). Gibson Mill was the subject of a National Trust Vernacular Buildings Survey in 1992. The resulting report, which contains photocopies of original photographic prints is held by WYAAS. The report provides a detailed historic back ground to the mill and architectural description of the mill and associated features (see PRN 12867). These also include 19th century workers' cottages (also see PRN 12867 PRN 12868). The report describes the bridge as linking the Gibson's property at Greenwood Lee to the Gibson Mill complex. It has a segmental arch with rough dressed voussoirs and soffit. The west end springs from a gritstone plinth; the east end from a revetment wall. In the early 20th century it served as a toll bridge for an amusement complex here. The bridge makes an important contribution to the mill complex, together with the revetment walls, track ways and woodland. (National Trust Vernacular Buildings Survey. 1992. 'Gibson Mill, Hardcastle Crags'). |
