TitleSmall Cave on Riverside Cliffs, Boston Spa
DescriptionA small cave in the Magnesian Limestone cliff face with a platform outside. Although the cave is now not easily accesible and would certainly not appear habitable the cave may potentially contain deposits from earlier habitation, when the cave floor was not infilled. certainly examples in North Yorkshire within the Magnesian Limestone have been shown to have evidence of previous occupation from the Prehstoric to Medieval periods.
The cave is also of geological interest and has a overhanging rock dome which has lines of small solution holes or 'vugs' often used for nesting by birds. The cave now also has some damage and graffiti (BSHAG 2013).
The cave is included on the Boston Spa Archaeology and Heritage Group's Heritage List which will be incorporated into the Boston Spa Parish Council's Neighbourhood Plan and identified for preservation. BSHAG also note the caves potential for excavation.
