TitleMoorlands Quarry, Boston Spa
DescriptionMoorlands Quarry a disused quarry in the Cadeby Magnesian Limestone cliffs (PRN 12763) at Boston Spa. As with West End Quarry (PRN 12764) the quarry is suggested to be the source of building stone for buildings within Thorp Arch. The precise date of the quarry is unknown but the BSAHG (2013) suggest that a c.150 200 year old tree in the spoil heap of the quarry suggest a rough date for the quarry. The BSAHG (2009, p.9) description of the quarry is as follows:
'Moorlands Quarry’ is 32m long and 6m high, with tool marks and angled faces cut into the magnesian
limestone, which contains some crystals of calcite. Most of the remaining face has been quarried and the
bedding is horizontal along its whole section. It has prominent spoil heaps, which slope down towards the river
and have been tunnelled into by rabbits or badgers. An elm tree about 150 to 200 years old, growing on the
main spoil heap, suggests that the quarry may have gone out of use before or during the main period of
accelerated building development of Georgian Boston Spa.'
The quarry is included on the Boston Spa Archaeology and Heritage Group's Heritage List which will be incorporated into the Boston Spa Parish Council's Neighbourhood Plan and identified for preservation.
