TitleGeophysical and Metal Detector Surveys, Bramham Moor
DescriptionIn October/November 2012 Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) undertook a programme of geophysical survey in advance of groundworks related to the laying of underground electricity cables across Bramham Moor (route centred at SE 4428 4195). Prior to the geophysical survey, West Yorkshire HER was consulted and it was confirmed that the area of the proposed route cuts across a heavily cropmarked landscape dating from the Iron Age/Romano British period, and two possible Roman roads (see Golder Associates’ 2012 WSI in appendix 1 of ASWYAS’s report).
A total area of 20 hectares was surveyed by ASWYAS and the geophysical survey identified numerous anomalies interpreted to be cropmarks (some of which were not previously known about) confirming the high archaeological potential of the area. Anomalies indicative of infilled ditches forming fields, enclosures and trackways of likely Iron Age/Romano British date were identified throughout the proposed route. In addition the line of a Roman road, with roadside quarry pits was also identified.
A metal detector survey was also conducted by ASWYAS in November 2012 over part of Camp Hill, south of Paradise Farm (towards the southern end of the proposed cable corridor) as the site of the Battle of Bramham Moor (1408) is recorded to have been fought in the area. However, no artefacts were recovered that we likely to have been associated with the battle.
For further details please see the final report (ASWYAS, 2012), a copy of which is on file in the HER.
