TitleBarn at Dark Wood Farm (now demolished), Slaithwaite
DescriptionDemolished barn at Dark Wood Farm, Slaithwaite (SE 06539 13454). Probably late 18th to early 19th century.

In 2007 this barn was the subject of a planning application for 'Listed building consent for reinstatement of collapsed barn and lowering of ground level' (Kirklees Metropolitan Planning Services application number 07/65/94200/W1). As part of the planning condition a photo graphic record was made (Heppenstalls: Architecture, Surveying, Planning. 2007. 'Photographic Record at Dark Wood Curtilage Barn, Ing Lane, Slaithwaite'). A copy of these images is held by WYAAS.
This barn (now demolished) formed part of Dark Wood [Farm] in the immediate area. The farm has two English Heritage listed building designations:

(English Heritage listed building description. Date listed 02/07/1984. http://list.english heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1225000. Web site accessed 10/04/2013).
The images of the photographic survey describe a barn on two floors built back to earth with the long axis running down the hill orientated south east/north west. The barn was three bays long on the upper floor and two bays long on the lower ground floor. The barn was constructed using coursed rubble masonry with heavier stone quoins on angles. The gabled roof was of sandstone flags. The bay at the lowest end was possibly a later addition as a clear break was visible in this position and there was evidence for a blocked door with heavy monolithic lintel at the south end of the long south west facing wall. Two small single storey rubble built sheds were attached: one on the south gable and the other on the south end of the long south west facing wall. The south gable had two lower ground floor entrances; one entered into the shed (the only means of access into this extension). The south gable entrance had monolithic jambs and a heavy lintel.
The upper floor was entered by a wide entrance on the northern end of the long south west facing wall and, due to the slope, was at ground level at this end. This entrance had a wooden lintel. The roof had a shallow angle and was supported with queen post struts.
