TitleFormer Shaw Royd House, Halifax
DescriptionFormer Shaw Royd (now demolished), Halifax (SE 09617 24302). Pre 1851 villa.

A house and garden was depicted here in 1851 in an area of land between mills on Shaw Hill Lane and the L. and Y.R Sowerby Bridge, Halifax and Bradford Line (OS 6' first edition. 1850. Sheet 231).
Shaw Royd was a three bay double pile villa set in a small formally landscaped garden. The front of the house had, what appears from available mapping, two symmetrically opposed bay windows flanking a central doorway, probably with steps and a porch canopy. A possible mill pond may have been present in the north east corner of the garden.
The house may have been a contemporary of Shaw Lodge to the south, built by John Holdsworth owner of near by Shaw Lodge Mill and was mentioned in 1835 as newly erected (Calder District Archives. HAS:B:159: 10/03/1835). The mill pond in the garden support this being a mill owner's house.
The house was demolished after 1949 to be replaced by modern prefabricated industrial shed (OS 6' 4th edition. c.1949. Sheet 231 and http://maps.google.co.uk/. Web site accessed 28/03/2013).
