Title | 99 Lee Moor Lane, Stanley cum Wrenthorpe |
Description | 99, Lee Moor Lane, Stanley cum Wrenthorpe (SE 34515 25253). Single storey cottages, 18th or 19th century? 99, Lee Moor Lane was the subject of an archaeological assessment by Lucy Caffyn in January 1982 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Worker's Housing Survey. The photographic print produced is held by WYAAS (Caffyn, L. 1982. 'Stanley cum Wrenthorpe. 99, Lee Moor Lane, Lee Moor'). The image depicts a single storey two unit cottage with central ridge stack. The visible elevation has a single light window in each unit and a low door to the left side. The house is rendered but is probably stone built and the roof tiles are covered in bitumen. Single storey cottages of this type in West Yorkshire are frequently associated with the extractive industries of the 18th and early 19th century as quarry or colliery workers' cottages. The cottage appears to be present in the mid 19th century (OS 6' 1st edition. c.1851. Sheet 233). The cottage at this time was situated at the edge of the partially enclosed Lee Moor with a large scale quarry to the south and a small quarry to the north. |
