Description | Shaw Park and aviary, Stainland (SE 08876 19598. Aviary position). Shaw Park was formerly part of the Shaw estate. The park was created in the mid to late 19th century as the gardens to the former Brooklands Hall situated to the north of the park (SE 08854 19731) (OS 6' 1st edition. c.1850. Sheet 246 and OS 6' 2nd edition. c.1894. Sheet 246). The house was demolished in the 1930s with the stone being used to build the houses in Brooklands Avenue which now occupies the site. Although the grounds were given to the former Elland Urban Council in 1953, the park was open to the public in the 19th century, later to become a recreation ground for workers at Shaws' nearby Brookroyd Mills (Evening Courier. 28/08/2013. Article relating to Shaw Park, Holywell Green. 'Park Oasis in the Village'). Some features of the original 19th century have been retained. These include the 1870s aviary described below. Some of the original paths and ponds also appear to be extant. Two other features associated with Shaw Park have English Heritage listed building designations. These include a gate house and ornamental towers with linking wall (see PRN12466 and PRN12467). 'Aviary, now disused. c1870. Dressed stone with ashlar dressings, slate and corrugated iron roofs. 3 storey central tower, with dentilated first floor band, moulded and dentilated upper floor band and deep bracketed eaves cornice.
