Aufhole Barn was the subject of planning application in 2002 for 'conversion of barn to dwelling' (Calderdale Council planning reference number 02/01447/LBC). The architects plan's associated with this application are held by WYAAS (Michael Denton Associates. Chartered Buildings Surveyors. 2002. 'Proposed conversion. Aufhole Barn, Foxen Lane, Mill Bank. Halifax. Plans and elevations as existing').
Peter Thornborrow (Senior Historic Buildings Officer, WYAS) provided the consultation response. Thornborrow described the barn as dating to around 1800 with identical elevations on the front and rear sides with tall arched cart entries and mistal doors to each side with a pair of small lunette ventilators to either side of a first floor three light mullioned window above the cart entry. Its gables are identical in having a three light ground floor window and three lunettes set in the gables. Internally it has a five bay queen post roof with softwood trusses and two areas for animals to either side of the cart entry with stone division walls and retaining a good floor frame with spine beams and square cut joist on each side. The barn is set in open countryside with a footpath to its front, its back against the hillside that has been excavated away with rubble stone retaining walls around three sides of the barn, with a stone flagged floor surface. In one corner is an iron chain with a tethering hook set into a large boulder that is of some interest.
Thornborrow made several comments regarding the proposed alterations which largely involved altering the form of doors, windows and interior fittings in favour of retaining historic character. Thornborrow also recommended that the building should be subject to a architectural recording prior to alteration (Thornborrow, P.H. (WYAS). 2002. Consultation response regarding Calderdale Council planning reference number 02/01447/LBC. Barn at Aufhole, Soyland).
Thornborrow also produced the building recording specification which required a photographic record of the building, annotated plans and a short report. The plans to be of a larger scale than the provided architect plans, focusing on historical interior details (Thornborrow, P.H. (WYAS). 2002. Building recording specification regarding Calderdale Council planning reference number 02/01447/LBC. Barn at Aufhole, Soyland).
The survey was undertaken by Stephen Haigh in 2003. The photographic images, plans and report produce by the survey are held by WYAAS. The report is summarised below.
The barn has a rectangular plan, 13.8m by 7.7m and faces north north west onto Clapgate Lane. It is set within a former quarry, the lowest parts have been stabilised by a dry stone retaining wall. The site over looks the remains of a row of buildings demolished in the 1960s [see PRN12385]. The building has walls of thinly coursed gritstone rubble, without quoins but with dressed surrounds to all openings. There are plain stone gutter brackets to the front elevation, above which is a stone roof with a stone ridge.
