Title | Quarry, Worts Hill, Slaithwaite |
Description | Pre enclosure quarries on Worts Hill, Pole Moor (SE 06262 15654). Aerial photographs of Worts Hill, Pole Moor taken in 2001 depict several small quarries/delphs pocketing the summit and western slopes (NMR Air Photo Library reference number 17538. 09/02/2011. Frame numbers 45, 47 and 48 and NMR Air Photo Library reference number 17541. 09/02/2011. Frame numbers 08 and 11. Images held in WYAAS archives). The images also depict two track ways with serpentine routes to the summit quarries: one starting a SE 05879 15712 on New Hey Road and terminating at SE 06229 15644; the other starting at SE 06614 15797 on Pole Gate Branch [Lane] and terminating at SE 06349 15692. Although these former tracks and quarries are present as prominent earthwork features, they are no longer represented by the current field boundaries and the green lane that follows the Worts Hill water shed. It is likely that the quarries and tracks originate from before the enclosure of Pole Moor (late 18th to early 19th century?). Incidentally, a projected line of Roman Road 712 from Castleshaw to Outlane also crosses the summit of Worts Hill following the line of the historic township boundary between Slaithwaite and Scammonden (see PRN3509, PRN3510 and PRN12374). (Lunn, K.R. (WYAAS). 2013. Description of quarry features on Worts Hill based on aerial photographs. Description based in record only). |
