Title | Geophysical Survey, Castle Hill, Almondbury |
Description | Between July and December 2012 Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) were commissioned by Kirklees Council to carry out a geophysical survey at the scheduled site of Castle Hill, Almondbury (PRN 2). The work covered seven areas, including the Middle and Outer Wards, Motte and Annexe but also included areas on the slopes of the hill. The survey was carried out as part of a wider research project investigating the site in preparation for a Heritage Lottery bid. Anomalies corresponding with many of the trenches excavated by W. J. Varley between 1939 and 1973 were identified together with other anomalies indicative of ridge and furrow ploughing, and former walled field boundaries. No anomalies indicative of medieval settlement activity were identified in the Outer Ward, neither was it possible to identify whether the outer banks of the ramparts are natural or man made – only further trail trenching is likely to answer these last two questions. For further details, and to view the exact extent and location of the areas included in the geophysical survey, please see the final report (ASWYAS, 2013), a copy of which is on file in West Yorkshire HER. |
