TitleWatching Brief at Beech Hill, Pontefract
DescriptionIn November 2012 Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) undertook an archaeological watching brief during the excavation of a trench to locate and repair a broken sewer pipe at the northern end of Beech Hill, Pontefract.
A single trench, measuring 2.8m in length and 2.25m in width, was excavated down to a depth of 3.5m from the ground surface. The excavations exposed natural bedrock and did not identify any archaeological features or finds, despite the site being in close proximity to Pontefract Castle (PRN 2089) and Anglo Saxon remains (PRN 2327). This would suggest that the area has been heavily truncated in the past perhaps removing all archaeological remains.
For further details please see the final report (ASWYAS, 2012), a copy of which is on file in West Yorkshire HER.

In April 2013 phase two of the above archaeological watching brief was undertaken by ASWYAS. A 2.5m deep pit was excavated down to the broken sewer pipe at Beech Hill, and a terrace was cut into the side of the hill in order to provide the machine with a safe working platform. All the excavation was monitored but no archaeological features or artfeacts were encountered.
For further details please see the final report (ASWYAS, 2013), a copy of which is on file in the HER.
