Description | 21, Hubberton Green, Sowerby (SE 03406 22881). Mid19th century back to back houses. 21, Hubberton Green was the subject of an archaeological assessment by Lucy Caffyn c.1982 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Workers' Housing Survey. The photographic image and field sketch plans made during the assessement are held by WYAAS. The field work report is transcribed below: 'This consists of two back to back cottages, the end pair of ten back to backs (nos.17 21), which were built in the mid 19th century facing north south (they are said to have been built by the Crossleys?). No 17 was built on its own and probably added to nos.18 21. The cottages are built of watershot stone with stone slate roofs. The gutter brackets are sloped at the front (south side) and are plain at the back. The doors and windows have stone surrounds, flush with the wall, and the windows have a central mullion. There are iron gutter hinges on the jambs of the ground floor windows. No.21 was recorded. The entry is straight into the living room, which has a fire place and a wall cupboard. Being the end cottages these two were given an additional window in the gable. Wooden stairs lead up to the heated bedroom. There is a small cupboard in the side of the chimney breast nearest the window, where the fire bends away but is boxed in.' Ceiling heights; ground floor is 2.3m and the first floor is 2.26m.
