TitleCellar and WWII Air Raid Shelter, rear 24 Commercial St, Rothwell
DescriptionBuilding recording was carried out in August 2007 by Elizabeth Chamberlin on behalf of West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service (WYAAS) prior to the construction of a residential property at the site. The following notes were made during the visit:
Stone line barrel vaulted cellar, which has been re used in the second world war as an Air Raid shelter. The cellar is particularly large and clearly relates to the outline of a now demolished structure which once stood above it. Buildings are shown on this footprint on the 1851 OS map. When the cellar has been re used as an air raid shelter, a typical WWII brick and concrete entrance has been constructed to give access to the cellar and the interior divided into two large areas by a brick wall, which has been constructed across the short section of the cellar.
Cellar oriented roughly N S at right angles to Commercial Street.

A copy of the above report including maps and photographs, is held on file at the offices of West Yorkshire HER.
