Date listed 02/12/1983. http://list.english heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1314041. Web site accessed 24/05/2013) The barn at Upper March Farm was the subject of a photographic survey in October 2002 (Calder Architectural Services. 2002. 'Upper Marsh Farm. Bank Top. Southowram. Halifax') possibly as a result of a planning condition. No background information is provided with the report but in1997 the barn was the subject of a planning for the 'conversion of barn to form two dwellings (Renewal of Permission No. 92/01083)' (Calderdale Council planning reference number: 97/01034/REN). A copy of the photographic record with accompanying plans is held by WYAAS. The images depict a barn of three bays, the central bay containing two opposing cart entrances. The open area of the middle bay is subdivided by a boarded partition across the middle. Both end bays contain a mistal area and stalls. The western bay also has a larger area providing barn space. The barn is built of coursed sandstone rubble and is gabled at the eastern end. Dove holes are present on the apex of the gable. At the time of survey, the internal wooden divisions sub dividing the mistal areas were extant. The eastern bay has a passage along the gable wall which probably serviced four animal stalls. The mistal of the western bay is subdivided into two stalls and a service area. The floors of the barn throughout is of stone flags or cobbles with shallow stone channels providing drainage. The barn has a planked upper floor, the upper area being an open area. A single internal staircase is present in the south east corner. The roof is supported by three queen post roof frames each with pair of diagonally braced side posts. The purlins were butted. |
