Description | Law Farm, Southowram (SE 1128 24234). House dated 1618 with stone work possibly concealing earlier timber framing. 'House, possibly 1618 (date in render over entrance). Hammer dressed stone, rendered to front, stone slate roof. 2 storey south front of 4 rooms with principal doorway centrally placed to left of central ridge stack. This originally led to a cross passage. All windows are double chamfered mullioned, of 4, 6 transom window of 12 (now lacking transom) and 4 lights. Over are flat faced mullion windows mainly of 4 lights. Right hand return wall has extruded stack, to supposed parlour. Built over single storey aisle to rear is 2 storey early C18 gabled wing, with flat faced mullioned windows with double frames and square reveals, of 4 lights to ground floor and 3 lights to 1st floor. Quoins, coped gable and kneelers. Interior said to have evidence for firehood bressumer. Housebody has ovolo moulded spine beams and to east evidence of former timbered wall with closing truss of 'A' strut king post type. Westerdale, a former student of the University of Manchester (Westerdale, W. 1983. Section from 'The houses of Shibden Dale'. Unpublished MA thesis. University of Manchester School of Architecture and Planning). A copy the section of this thesis together with the plan relating to Law Farm is held by WYAAS. The section is summarised below: Law is a four unit house built of narrow coursed local sandstone. Rendering conceals the construction details on all but the north elevation. Enclosed within the stone work are the remains of an earlier timber framed house possibly dating to the 15th or 16th century. |
