Title | Rectory Farm (site of), South Kirkby |
Description | Rectory Farm (now demolished), South Kirkby (SE 45250 11070). Former rectory and ancient farm house possibly dating to the 14th century. Rectory Farm was the subject of a newspaper article from around the 1960s [source unclear] which describes the ancient farmhouse in a derelict state with timbers 'too far gone' to be repaired; the house at this time was due for demolition. The house was once the Vicarage for the adjacent All Saints' Church, possibly from the time of its construction. The article describes the oldest part of the building to be a stone built section dating to the late 14th century with plaster and timber added in Elizabethan times. A gabled wing of hand made brick was added later still. The house was once the home of George Beaumont, the 'Cavalier Vicar' made famous at the siege of Pontefract Castle during the English Civil War (newspaper cutting from around the 1960s held in WYAAS records. 'Kirkby's ancient Rectory Farm demolished'). Rectory Farm was situated in the area of land to the right of the junction of Stockingate and White Apron Street, a street added in the early to mid 20th century according to OS mapping at this time (OS 6' 4th edition. c.1948. Sheet 263). Mapping describes an irregular planned building in this position with a NE/SW alignment. The house formed part of the Vicarage Farm complex with a probable barn to the southwest and a quadrangle of buildings (which may be related) to the south. The barn is extant, now converted to a dwelling (see PRN12214). Of the range to the south, only the eastern extension survives and is named 'Tithe Barn' on modern mapping (OS Master Map 2011). See PRN12215 for further information. A photocopy of photographic images of Rectory Farm taken in the 1950s are held in WYAAS records (no further information). The images depict the hall with cross wing plan. The cross wing was present at the upper eastern end and projected southward forming an 'L' shaped plan. A double centrally placed gable was present on the southern return which projected to form small twin wings. The northern elevation was not covered by the available imagery but had various projections in plan of unknown form and function. |
