TitleUnion Mills (demolished), Briggate, Shipley
DescriptionUnion Mills (demolished), Briggate (SE 15142 37681). Scribbling mill depicted and named in 1848.

Union Mills was described as a scribbling mill on the OS 1st edition 6' map of 1848 (sheet 201). Scribbling mills were used for the preparation of fleece for spinning by carding. This was a long narrow building (c.85m by 15m) with a northeast/southwest alignment. A smaller long narrow building (c.56m long) with a northeast/southwest alignment projected from the northern end of the range. A large mill pond was also present to the northeast of the site. The site continued to develop throughout the later 19th century with additional sheds constructed to the north of the range and further sheds running parallel to the west of the original mill (OS 2nd edition 6'. Sheet 201. c.1894).
An aerial photo survey of 1986 describes a two storey building with a gabled roof. It is likely that this is the mill building that appeared on mid 19th century mapping. The mill chimney was square and tapered and occurred as part of a range of rectangular sheds positioned midway along the long northwest wall of the two storied mill body (Aerial photograph NMR SF3130. 05/09/1986. SE1537/4/171A).
Current on line mapping resources depict the mill as destroyed and the site redeveloped (http://maps.google.co.uk/. Web site accessed 29/04/2013)
