Description | Manor house, now house. Probably late 16th century, extended in the 17th century; altered (and probably partly demolished). Constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins and stone slate roof. An irregular plan, now F shaped, of which the left half and central wing (formerly the west crosswing) is the earlier. Two storeys; 3 bay 16th century range on the east west axis, with projecting wing to front (north side) of 3rd bay; single bay continuation of main range to the right, and similar projecting wing overlapping west end of this. Central wing has 18th century plain doorway to left (single storey porch in course of erection at time of survey), a blocked doorway and 2 inserted windows to the right, at 1st floor recessed mullioned windows of 2 and 3 round headed lights, and gable coping with kneelers; left re entrant wall of this wing has lintel of Tudor arched doorway (altered as window), and a canted addition in the angle; to the left the main range has a deeply recessed mullioned window on each floor (5 lights at ground floor, restored, and probably formerly similar above, altered), and to left of these a recessed square window at intermediate level. Left gable wall has inter alia a Tudor arched chamfered doorway (now covered by addition which is not included in the item). Added main range to right has two 2 light windows on each floor (restored), re entrant of right wing has 2 similar windows at 1st floor (on different levels), blocked openings at ground floor; gable of this wing has mullioned windows of 4 lights at ground floor, 3 lights above, (restored), and gable coping with kneelers. Chimneys at the left gable, right hand side of each wing, and on ridge at junction of main range. South front (to garden) has coupled gables at the junction of the builds; that on the right, (which is the south gable of the earlier wing), has recessed mullioned windows of 6 round headed lights at ground floor (sill probably lowered) and 4 similar lights above; that on the left has two 2 light windows on each floor, all with chamfered mullions; copings to both gables, and a stone spout between them. Modern addition to this side of main range, with catslide roof. Interior: altered at various periods, but the earlier main range has 3 king post roof trusses of exceptionally large scantling, all with V struts, longitudinal bracing to the ridge, and carpenters marks of long diagonal strokes 'I' 'II' and 'III' respectively; large blocked square mortices and double mortices in the tie beams suggesting former use as wall plates. Otherwise the principal features of interest are 2 stone fireplaces in the former outer side wall of the 16th century crosswing; that at ground floor large, rectangular, with moulded jambs and rising stop, and that in the chamber above smaller and Tudor arched.
