Title | Watching Brief, Friarwood Valley Gardens, Pontefract |
Description | An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) during groundworks associated with drainage improvement works within Friarwood Valley Gardens, Pontefract. The watching brief was undertaken between 23rd July and 8th August 2012. The excavations consisted of three separate areas; a soakaway (SE 4564 2158), soil storage area (SE 4552 2157) and an area around a stone lined culvert which was previously identified by ASWYAS in 2011 (SE 4557 2161 see PRN 10929). No archaeological features or finds were recovered from either the soakaway or soil storage areas. The stone lined culvert was once again investigated within the third area. No dating evidence was recovered from the culvert limiting the interpretation of this feature, however it is thought that the feature is probably modern in date rather than medieval. Nevertheless it is possible that the culvert may reflect the earlier line of a medieval culvert associated with the St Richard Dominican Friary (which lies to the east of the present gardens – see PRN 3403) that is depicted on Jollage’s plan of 1742. For further details please see the final watching brief report (ASWYAS, 2012), a copy of which is on file in the HER. |
