TitlePublic Market Hall, Carlton Street
DescriptionThe Public Market Hall, Carlton Street, was built in 1880 and is included on the Wakefield Local Interest Buildings list (1989). The building is also regarded as an important heritage asset by Castleford and District Historical Society and was put forward by them as a local site nomination in 2011.
Following the weekly open markets, which began in the 1860s, a public Market Hall was built. The site was laid out in November 1878 and consisted of an arcade of 16 shops, galleries with 31 side shops, extensive cellarage and 89 stalls (Wakefield District library Service, 1999: 51). The Market Hall was restored in 1929 following a fire on 31/12/1927 (WDLS, 1994: 47). The original market clock was donated by Claude Leatham in 1907 and survived the fire of 1927, but was removed in March 1971 and was replaced by a modern clock (WDLS, 1999: 51). The shell of Market Hall arcade and frontage is now all that remains, after demolition in 1992 (Wakefield District Library Services, 1994: 47).
