Title | Former Odeon Cinema, Prince's Way |
Description | Former Odeon cinema (previously known as the ‘Gaumont Cinema’, and before that ‘New Victoria Picture Theatre’), built originally in 1930 to provide a range of social activities (such as a dance hall, stage, orchestra pit, restaurant, tea lounge as well as a cinema screen). The building is constructed with a steel and reinforced concrete structure with brick and terracotta cladding. Externally it comprises of a 3 storey auditorium to the south with a central entrance on the east front flanked by domed towers and a rectangular ‘wing’ of 2 storeys behind the north tower. Internally the structure comprises of a labyrinth of rooms and spaces on many levels, some of which have been walled or ceiling off. This is the result of major structural chances in 1969 that saw the former stalls become a bingo hall and the insertion of a steel and concrete box from the upper balcony level to form a new twin screen venue. The former dance hall was later converted to a third screen. A photgraphic building recording survey of the former Odeon cinema was carried out by David Michelmore Consultancy during September and October 2008. A copy of the report is on file at West Yorkshire HER. |
