Title | Former Machine and Fitting Shops for Fenton, Murray and Wood, Round Foundry |
Description | The building was formerly a fitting up shop built between 1795 1802 as a part of the Round Foundry (PRN 9682) for Matthew Murray, but has since been converted to a motor radiator repair workshop. It was constructed of red/brown brick in an irregular 1:5 English bond with the Foundry Street frontage and east side rendered and lined, and has a slate roof with stepped gutter brackets and skylights. The building is of 3 storeys and has 9 1st floor windows in addition to an inserted vehicular access cutting though the ground floor to the right. A lower, 3 storey, 3 window rendered block is located at the south end. The east elevation has 3 rendered bays to the left with loading doors to the right. The taller range has windows, some with 16 panes, with slightly cambered arches. A full height straight joint is positioned between the 6th and 7th windows, windows to the left have header arches while those to the right have stretcher arches. To the left are also glazed holding doors with vehicular access above. The ground floor retains traces of a blocked round arched opening to the right of the 20th century access and traces of another, taller opening to the left. The floor levels are marked by a double row of rectangular sandstone blocks. The interior contains columns supported beams on the ground and 1st floors, while the southern 3 bays are iron framed. The northern bays contain some jack arches. An iron framed strong room was also built into the ground floor, south of an inserted passage. (Text edited from Listed Building Description) |
