Description | Former Baptist chapel in the Romanesque style, dated 1863. Constructed of rusticated stone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. 2 storeys with attic and basement. 3 bays. The central bay breaks forward, is taller and gabled, and has four grouped round headed windows on each floor and a large, round, central window with plate tracery on first floor; stepped arcading in gable; machicolated eaves course. Lower side bays each have a round arched entrance with date over, paired round arched windows to first floor and moulded gutter brackets. Segment headed basement windows (Text edited from English Heritage’s LBO description). Attached to the left of the former Baptist chapel, but slightly set forward, is a 2 storey, 5 bay former Sunday school with a symmetrical façade. The central 3 bays break forward under a triangular pediment with a large 2 light round top window. To either side are segmental headed window retaining original stained glass. The hipped roof has canted angles and attached to the rear is a large hall with a low sweeping roof (WYAS, 1993). |
