Title | The Queen's Theatre building, Commercial Street |
Description | The Queen’s Theatre, Castleford, was built in 1899 as a concert hall with seats for 1,000 people (Wilders 1995) and was constructed of limestone with a tiled roof. In 1904 it became the Hippodrome Music Hall, and three years later the building was taken over by travelling film show promoters Will Emerson and Charlie Beanland who reopened the Hall as the Queen's Theatre. The theatre combined the showing of films along with variety acts, but by 1931 it became solely a cinema and remained so until its closure in 1959. Following this the building was used as a Bingo Hall and then a Asda supermarket before finally being demolished in 1990 to make way for Castleford's new shopping centre (Wilders, 1995: 51). Please note: Although the Queens Theatre Building is included on the Local Buildings List for Wakefield (2008), due to the fact the Queens' had already been demolished for 18 years by 2008, it is probably likely the local list actually refers to the adjacent former Picture House (see PRN 10899) which is still extant. |
