Description | The Gospel Hall, Station Lane, dates to the late 19th century. It is built of red brick with some features such as the lintels on the various elevations finished with stone. The front façade, facing Station Lane consists of 3 bays. The 1st and 3rd are recessed with Venetian windows comprising tall 4 pane arched windows with a cornice and keystone, though without flanking pilasters or full entablature. The central bay has a projecting porch, which provides the main access into the building, comprising a central pediment with large scale corbelled kneelers at cornice level. Above, set back into the elevation, is a tall two pane wide arched window with a shallow stone hoodmould contrasting with the red brick. Above the arched hoodmould is an embossed inscription in stone: 'GOSPEL HALL'. The elevation is crowned by a gable, which like the front porch is coped with corbelled kneelers. The left and right hand returns are both of 4 bays, each containing 2 tall windows, one placed above the other, with a monolithic lintel. The building is included in the Local Buildings List (2008) for Wakefield. |
