TitleFar Dean Field Cottage
DescriptionThis is a stone house dating in part from the mid 17th century and in part from the late 17th century. The house is of two storeys, and is built of coursed rubble masonry.
The original house was of two cells, and the main doorway (sheltered by the added porch) has a square head and a broad chamfered surround. The windows have recessed splayed mullions and a hood mould. In the late 17th century the house was enlarged by the addition of the western cell and of the porch. The porch is of two storeys and is gabled to the south; the porch contain a beehive oven which is probably an original feature. The western cell is subdivided to give two rooms. The southernmost of these rooms retains a fragment of plaster frieze on its west wall; the frieze has a fleur de lys motif and the date ’16??’.
In the 19th century an added block was built to the east. The construction of this block possible signalled the decline of the early house, which was abandoned as a dwelling some years ago (text edited from Giles, 1980).
