TitleCrown Saw Mill
DescriptionFormer early/mid 19th century industrial steam powered mill building (originally cotton, then later timber) of several builds. Built of coursed sandstone, with a stone slate roof. 3 storey mill building with basement. Left hand portion of the west front (to river) may date to the late 18th century (according to English Heritage’s LBO description); this elevation features ten 1st floor windows, the basement is treated as plinth and has one small arched opening, one large arched opening now blinded, a doorway and 4 square openings all with plain stone surrounds. Windows to ground and 1st floors have flush stone cills and lintels. At the right corner is a low chimney on square corniced base; this is decorated with a number of stone heads located at the bottom of the shaft. The right hand portion of the mill building dates from the early 19th century and is of 2 storeys with basement. East front to yard: 1st floor taking in doors have plain stone surrounds with interrupted jambs. The interior of original mill features cast iron and timber columns which support large scantling timber beams.
