TitleNos. 53-67 Church Street
DescriptionRow of shops with upper floor maisonettes, dated c.1890. Built of coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings and a blue slate roof. Located at the junction of Church Street/Bridge Street the buildings follow the curved alignment of the street. Most retain part of their original shop fronts with timber cased surrounds and cornice. The upper floors have pedimented window cases and are each different in detail. Modillioned cornice to stone gutter. This row of shops has strong group value with Hattersley Crescent only a few doors further up the street (PRN 9947). (WYAS, 1993)
English Heritage lists one (or more) building as ‘Fountain Inn’; it states that the building was formerly two late 18th century houses but now an inn (1986). Of 3 storeys and 3 bays in all the building is cement rendered with a stone slate roof. To the right is a 20th century door and overlight in plain stone surround flanked by 2 light, flat faced mullion windows in flush stone surrounds. To the left was a door (now window) with a 2 light window adjoining it to the right. 1st and 2nd floors have here 3light windows, with wider central lights. End stack to right (English Heritage’s LBO description).
