Title | The Grinning Rat (Formerly The Devonshire Arms), Church Street |
Description | Former coaching inn (now public house), dated c.1790, built of coursed sandstone with a stone slate roof. Formerly ‘The Devonshire Arms’ from which the ‘Union’ coach departed for Kendal. Corner building; 3 storeys and 3 bays fronting Church Street. To the right of this elevation is a pedimented doorcase with Tuscan columns. Windows to the left and above have sill bands and unusual notched lintels cut with false voussiors (typical of the architect William Atkinson). Modillion cornice (WYAS, 1993). |
