TitleField End Farm
DescriptionField End Farm is a pair of semi detached cottages, dated 1799. It is of three storeys, faces south east (south for the purposes of this report), and is built of coursed rubble masonry, quoined at the angles. The west end of the range is a contemporary laithe, and a single storey cottage has been added to the east gable.
The south front of the building has windows with square flush mullions. Doorways to the two cottages are grouped in the centre of the main block. Over the doorways is the datestone reading 'Built by Jo[f]esph and Hannah Lockwood, AD1799'. The lower laithe to the west is contemporary, for there is no break in the masonry between the two parts. It is likely that the laithe was used for the housing of beasts and of crops, but it is not clear whether it was used exclusively by the occupant of the western cottage or whether the occupiers of both cottages were able to use it.
The cottages have a single large room on the ground floor, with a small area screened off to the north to give a service area. It is reported that, while the present connection between the two cottages is of recent creation, work on the doorway revealed the former existence of an earlier connection in much the same position. It is possible then, that the two cottages sheltered two parts of a larger household, with perhaps two generations or two related families sharing the build between them. The top storey was probably a weaving shop.
A single storey cottage was added to the east gable of the block in the early 19th century. This seems to have provided accommodation for an independent household, for there is no sign of communication between it and the main build.
