Description | Row of shops, with a mixture of offices and maisonettes over. Constructed of dressed stone (ashlar) with a slate roof. Built in two separate phases; Nos. 11 17 apparently dating from the early 19th century and Nos. 5 9 in c.1900 (WYAS, 1993). Nos. 5 9 consist of a 3 storey, 3 bay building. The shops on ground floor retain original pilasters with lozenge decoration, but feature modern shop fronts. Upper storeys retain original 2 light sash windows, with carved frieze of masks above carved panels. Segmental pediments, shaped parapet, four tall stacks. Nos. 11 17 also feature modern shop fronts, but retain original windows in the upper storeys. First floor windows have eared architrave and triple keystones; second floor windows have two arched lights either side of stylised Venetian windows linked by raised triple bands, egg and dart cornice, and quoin pilaster strips. Roof lacks chimneys. |
