TitleSt Helen's CE (VA) JandI School
DescriptionAn educational excavation was undertaken at St Helen's CE (VA) JandI School, Hemsworth, in 2009. The excavation was run by Dave Weldrake of WYAAS in partnership with Wakefield Museums Service and also involved excavations at Sacred Heart RC Primary School (PRN 9907), Grove Lea Primary School (PRN 9908) and West End Junior and Infants School (PRN 9909). Approximately 200 school children took part.
The project aimed to provide further evidence for the medieval period in Hemsworth. A trench, 1.0m by 8.0m, was opened revealing featureless yellow natural below the topsoil
The finds included stems from 19th century clay pipes, a pottery made marble likely to date to the 17th century and fragments of 19th century glass.
